Cocoa Cooperation and Conversion
DIABAAKORUM, GHANA 2022
Ghana is the world's second largest cocoa producer. Cocoa is the most important cash crop in Ghana and is the source of income for most smallholders. But under the impact of climate change , parts of Ghana will no longer be suitable for growing cocoa. If this crisis in cocoa cultivation is not solved by 2050, many smallholders in Ghana will face severe survival problems.
This project aims to solve the problems of smallholders in the Diabaakorum, which will soon become unsuitable for cocoa cultivation. Converting land nature and cash crop type is the main means to address the inadaptability of cocoa cultivation. And before all the cocoa plantations will be converted, the project proposes a new supply model based on the cooperation between the government and chocolate companies in order to solve the current problem of profit distribution in the cocoa supply chain. After the conversion is complete, the new cash crop will bring farmers more income than cocoa. At the same time, the impact of climate change will be reduce due to the restoration of forests.
