Volcano Venture Filling the Void
NIUAFO’OU, TONGA 2022-2023
Tonga is an island national in the South Pacific Ocean with many volcanoes. In early 2022, Tonga was thrust into the world’s spotlight by the eruption of Hunga Tonga - Hunga Ha’apai. Some scholars believe that people should also pay attention to the protection and research of volcanic geological heritage while focusing on the prevention and restoration of volcanic disasters. However, Tonga does not have any volcanic geoarks that can be used for research and conservation.
In this project, I chose Niuafo’ou with significant volcanic features as the site for the construction of the national volcanic geopark. Through the research on the volcanic geological conditions and infrastructure construction, the relevent facilities of the national volcanic geopark have been planned on the island. With the exciting volcano venture activities and routes, Niuafo’ou can attract more tourists to participate in volcanic knowledge and geological heritage protection. Such a national volcanic geopark will fill the void in Tonga’s volcanic geological heritage protection.
